Has anyone heard of cases where Agile Approach had been attempted in the Energy Industry? If there are specific cases in Upstream (oil and gas) Energy I would be interested to learn more about it.

The team that I am working in have been practicing Waterfall Project Management Approach for years. When I told them that I am pursuing PMI-ACP certification, they became interested in knowing more about using Agile/Adaptive Approach. But before they jump in with both feet, they wonder if the energy industry (Chevron, BP, Shell, etc.) had ever ventured to try to move developing energy industry-specific Agile Approach that they can learn from?

While I know there is a big and accepted mistake about the use waterfall and Agile words (waterfall is a life cycle, Agile is an approach. You can use Agile approach in waterfall life cycles) I will say that I used Agile approach with waterfall and iterative-incremental life cycle in oild and gas, basically in two of the most important companies which belongs to brasilian and argentinian goverment. I can not put details here but it is easy: just do not confuse Agile with a method. But if you like to focus on a method search for case of studies of using DSDM in british government.

Thanks for your feedback. Without getting into specific details ... were you able to apply Agile approach recently? Like 2021? What were some of the benefits / lessons learned from that last application? Specifically, were either People, Process, Technology, and/or Cost/Time/Resource/Quality impacted?

Veerachai -

A quick Google search surfaced these links - I'm sure there are many more out there...

An adaptive approach is inherently well suited to situations where there is great uncertainty which is common in upstream energy situations, especially during the identification of energy resources.
