The job market can always make it challenging to find a job. With a certification however, you are definitely more marketable. Many advertised job descriptions require it, and many HR resume filters will too.
For one, it requires actual experience in PM. Secondly the test shows you have a reasonably good knowledge of the generally accepted standards. That makes your experience more "portable", than experience alone, particularly if your experience is in one place.

Being certified is indicative that you have in-depth knowledge about project management but not indicative of one's experience or their ability to do the job so certifications won't get you a job but they will help you stand out and put you ahead of the line with respect to other candidates but the call will be made based on your experience.

yes, it is always challenging to get a new job. A PMP certification helps mitigating that risk but is by no means sufficient, as my dear colleagues already pointed out.
A good practice to get a new job is to extend and nurture your network. Most jobs are found thru connections. The PMP network certainly can be helpful here. So become an active member of PMI as volunteer, as Chapter member, as contributor to forums like this.

Network is the key, no matter what the knowledge and experience you get. I totally agree with you Thomas. One of my friends, he is a professor also, he got a job recently a full time tenure position with other benefits. He said that this is the best job that he has never had. He did not know anyone from the university , however he got the announcement from LinkedIn and applied. This is networking again

Field experience is required to get a new job. You will not find too much job solicitudes where some statement like "apply only if you are certified". Saving Changes...

I fully disagree that network is the key. Experience and knowledge is the key. If we continue to believe on network then we contribute to make project/program/portfolio management "worst". Then, we should not have concerns about that.

I agree with all, everything is complementary. Since I got my PMP , I have received a lot of calls from indeed for PMP positions, sometimes I could not catch up with them. You need to have experience in order to apply for PMP certification which requires 3years of project management. experience. Networking is really helpful, sometimes you don't know if some positions exist until someone communicates it to you and guides you.
