Crash Course in PM for a new Project Manager?

Hey everyone! I have an entry level PM starting with some industry and relatable leadership experience, but has never been a project manager or have any PM training.

Are there any free resources you all have come across as a good "crash course" in project management that covers all the basics? Something like a 2-4 hour video. Obviously, this won't get into all the nitty gritty PMP level details but just the blocking and tackling to start to plant the seed on all the concepts.

I could make a course such as this myself based on my own personal experiences which seems like a fun initiative, but I am sure I would be reinventing the wheel.

Patrick,

I just finished such training materials for my team and already did it in the last days. It was a 2,5 hours online overview of PM basics with templates, etc. I got very positive feedback from the team.
I can offer to do the overview to your new PM, just so he gets rolling things and get a feeling of project management. In addition he can sign up for a more professional and more in dept PM training course.
Thanks for the offer! I appreciate that and it's very kind of you. I hate to tap into your valuable time like that and instead will start with the on demand courses provided in here, but really do appreciate the offer and will let you know if I reconsider.

Courses are great but only take you so far. Most adults learn best by doing. Your job is to provide a safe and encouraging experience. Consider assigning a buddy to your junior project manager.
Absolutely! I spend a good bit of time with PMs during our first week onboarding. I sync them up with an experienced PM as well as their mentor for hands on/shadowing. I then tend to coach/mentor along the way and provide guidance on specific projects as they are assigned and as we run across different situations. Hoping to add this crash course to kick start things and make sure all the bases are covered since I have not sat down and created a comprehensive program, and most the mentor/mentee tends to focus more on our internal processes and applications but not necessarily PMI concepts.

Thank you! Since both offered by PMI for free, I wonder how this differs from the link posted by Danielle to https://kickoff.pmi.org
Patrick

I am not sure I understand your question: The link I provided is for a different course (PM for Beginners) than the one Danielle provided (Project Kick-Off).

The PM for Beginners course is a good course for entry level PM as it goes through all aspects of project management so I recommend you take it first then you can take the Project Kick-Off which is a 45 min course about how to Kick-Off Projects.

Hope this helps.

Hello Rami,

Based on the outbrief I got, it looks like the "Kick off" course also covers all aspects of PM, it's just a different format.

Cheers,

Patrick

One thing I am noticing is I am now outdated to terminology when it comes to the latest version of the PMBOK. The process groups and knowledge areas are now antiquated terms, it appears. I need to take a "delta" course to get up to speed on the latest terminology!

I agree with Kiron. You would better review the basic and advanced contents very carefully.
