IT Networking and SW Development. Just as in building you, as a PM you don' necessarily need to be the guy swinging the hammer or laying the foundation you need to know the basics and what it involves you should know the fundamentals of IT Networking as well as SW development. As a PM you won't be coding but it helps to know that there are a number of different coding languages out there, development methodology (Waterfall and a Number of Forms of Agile) for Networking you would be looking to learn about servers, virtual machines, storage, Difference between back office and front office systems, etc. You don't need to be expert at it but have a good understanding which helps you in your job but also wins you the respect and cooperation of the SW and HW Engineers you'll be working with. I've seen many people in the industry who have exhibited disdain for a PM managing a HW or SW Development effort who doesn't understand what they are managing. On the other hand, even if you develop a certain expertise you are there to manage the effort and need to let the Engineers make the decisions. I learned early when was once told by Leadership to stay in my PM lane even though I have a technical undergrad and had an Engineer who refused to deliver and make decisions and was holding up a critical project.

Thank You Tim. I cannot tell you , how accurate your response is! It is right on. I have been so imbedded in recent projects, it drew my time from managing. I sincerely appreciate this. Health n Happiness!
What industry or type of project work do you wish to focus on? While marketability is important, so are you own interests so moving to a different domain just because there are more roles available won't help you if you don't enjoy those types of projects.

Thank You for your response. I do enjoy my current roles. However, this desire for change is economically driven. There are variables, that I haven't yet capitalized on.

Hi Jeffery, I started this path in earnest just over a year ago. My recommendation is to grow your tech skills in a vertical and a cloud. For me, that's Salesforce and AWS cloud practitioner as an enabler. Salesforce trains you on the skills with their free learning platform "Trailhead." The AWS piece brought in the business model awareness. So, this is not coding ... but low code/no code and capability level.

Project management is one of the tools, and I share Ian's perspective that there is more!
Look around at Salesforce, Workday, ServiceNow + the Clouds and find what fits.
If Salesforce is for you, then ... go Trailblazer!

As you know a PM do not need to be a subject matter expert, but the PM needs to have knowledge about the domain to be able to communication with subject matter experts. So, take into account the enterprise architecture. where simplifying it you have three main layers: business layer, application layer, technology layer and some people add information and security layer. Find into the internet, mainly in sites that belongs to consultant firms, what is the new market tendencies in application and information layers. If you ask me, try to understand all related to "as service" which is leaded by cloud technologies. And try to make a basic course of programing, not related to a language but something based on pseudo-code programming to understand what that means programming Saving Changes...

Jeffrey,
acquire the skills how to quickly acquire the skills (technical or not) needed for your next engagement. Build your wisdom.
This means e.g. learn how to listen, question, be non-judgemental, always take multiple perspectives, be humble, be able to live with uncertainty, have strategies to tackle problems, exert self-control...
A good start for all of these is to look at your emotional intelligence and improve it.
