Just wondering what the thoughts are in the PM community regarding getting a Master's in Project Management. Is it becoming more of an industry standard beyond PMP and other PMI certifications? What doors can it open? I'm also curious if there are some of you that have a Master's where did you receive it from? Also do you believe there was a good ROI outside of improving yourself personally and gaining more knowledge?

I received my Master's and Doctorate in Business, not project management. I also have a Master's in Teaching. I am not sure that you will see any ROI from a Master's in PM, however, I did see that there is a new degree program at Georgetown that offers a Master's in PM. I have heard great things, but I bet the price tag is huge.

I would consider a degree program and a certification to be an apples to oranges comparison. The latter is usually geared towards career growth whereas the former is usually attained with a higher purpose in mind. Outside of a career in academia, I haven't seen specific references to a Masters degree in project management in job descriptions. Mostly the emphasis is on a candidate's experience with credentials such as the PMP being a common "nice to have" requirement in some industries and geographic locations.

I agree with you and Rami. I have only seen a reference to PMP in the job postings I have seen lately not a degree requirement.

I totally agree with Kiron. The world changed a bit in this regards and I significantly noticed that the emphasis now is on industry specific certifications than university degrees. That doesn't mean that university degrees are not useful but like Kiron said, if you are looking for career growth, then certification is the way to go but if otherwise, then Masters degree would suit the purpose.

We always better research our target job market. However, Kiron made a valid point.
