Greetings everybody! I'm a former teacher turned project manager. I accepted a project manager position about 6 months ago and I'm looking for a mentor to bounce ideas off of. More specifically, I want help implementing project management processes at my current company which is fairly small and does not offer any formal training or education.

I currently have a mentor through my state chapter, but this person recommended I also have another mentor. Currently, I'm working on my CAPM and would like to start transferring technical knowledge into the workplace.

While I understand that different mentors can offer different kinds of help, it would be good to know what your chapter mentor offers and what you expect your second mentor to offer.

I agree with Stéphane's feedback, and would add that if you are interested in a second, virtual mentor, it would be helpful to provide info such as:

1. The industry and type of projects which you are managing
2. What sort of a time commitment you are looking for as far as meetings go
3. What specific objectives you have for this mentoring relationship

Great points!
* My current mentor is helping me formulate a career plan.
I would like another mentor who can help me apply and implemental PM processes at my place of work.
1. Construction would be the closest industry, but we currently make countertops and unique solid surface products.
- This is an industry I will likely not be in for a long period of time.
2. Time commitment, once or twice a month for a meeting no longer than one hour in duration.
3. Specifically, help me to understand and utilize project management principles and processes that would be beneficial for my knowledge and place of work.

Helping you manage your career is definitely the domain of a mentor. Helping you apply and implement processes at your place of work sounds more like you need a coach, preferably from your workplace.

Don't get me wrong, there's a value in having an outsider as a sounding board. Unless she knows your work environment, your coach/mentor can only give you advice and counsel of a general nature.

I understand exactly where you are coming from. General feedback would be beneficial as well. A coach is probably more accurate, this is not something I am getting at my current place of work, which is ok, but it is limiting my development as a project manager.

My main expertise is in Construction and Project Management.

I provide mentoring and coaching as part of my own business and would be glad to help you out. However, and while I usually am happy to provide a probono session once in a while for members of this community, I won't be able to do so in your case given the amount of time commitment you are looking for so if you are interested in mentoring / coaching as a service, feel free to touch base with me.
