I am currently completing my masters degree and would appreciate some feedback from the PM community. I am looking to investigate emotional intelligence in project management and want to gauge the level of understanding and implementation in the industry for my thesis. From looking at academic papers, it appears to be used a bit in construction management.
Has anyone any experience with emotional intelligence? I am considering a screening tool for evaluating project managers and possibly on how to increase emotional intelligence specifically for PMs. I see a bit discussed on the topic, but nothing concrete.
Has anyone any feedback or opinions on the topic?
I appreciate any feedback from this great community.
EI falls under the umbrella of "interpersonal skills" which is a critical tool for many of the PMBOK processes.
I'd be surprised if you don't find reference to it across all industries, not just construction.

Thanks for your replay Kiron. Having just completed the CAPM, so I am more familiar with the 6th edition, but I will look into the 7th edition.
Thanks again,
Cian.

Emotional Intelligence is one of the most important interpersonal skills to have but the hardest to acquire as it takes many years of experience and development for a project manager to have a decent level of emotional intelligence especially that it is also dependent on other skills like effective communication, active listening and so on.

Thanks Rami. I understand emotional intelligence is important and I think with the rise of AI, emotional intelligence and human interactions will be more vital to project success.
Thanks,
Cian.

Emotional intelligence is the key to getting things done through others. Project management is all about using team work to deliver projects. Whether you have PMI as your major reference point or any other management structure or methodology, its all based on communications, integration, and maximizing the positive impact of teams. Not surprising then that its prevalent in construction management as few deliverables are possible with one participant.
It obviously helps to know the technical aspects of the project, the technical aspects of management, but without emotional intelligence its mostly wasted.

Thank you Peter. 'human skills' are defiantly as important, if not more important for me than technical skills in project management. I hope to further investigate this area.

Cian,
agree with others here that emotional intelligence is a set of human competencies that is part of interpersonal skills and would add it is part of leadership and personal development.
You find a wealth of literature for leadership, e.g. leadership 2.0 by Bradbury et al., and also for personal development, look at academic research for psychology. The PMBoK ed6 already included some discussion about leadership, interpersonal in Chapter 3 and the PMP exam is made up of 42% questions in people skills.
Thank you for the valuable input Thomas. I really do appreciate it.
I must say, I do like Galway too, particularly on a nice spring day like today. I have Germany the few times and was in Berlin and Hannover. I hope to get back again soon.
