Business rules

Not sure if anyone can help me.
I am looking to develop an app to help a software company with project management. I am starting with the business rules but lacking clarity on how to specify their current methods into clear rules. Any ideas or suggestions please?

You might be better served on a business analysis forum, Krayna.

They should be be able to suggest business rules modelling methodologies and tools appropriate for your needs. (I've worked with inRule a few decades ago. It's a bit expensive for anything but enterprise-level projects.)

Business rules are different than business processes. The former is about what you have to decide upon (for example, can the client be approved for the loan?). The latter is about what actions you take (for example, forward the loan request to the branch manager).

You should consult with some of those prospect customers, i.e. software companies and evaluate their needs. Then think of PM standard requirements.

Business rules are different than business processes. The former is about what you have to decide upon (for example, can the client be approved for the loan?). The latter is about what actions you take (for example, forward the loan request to the branch manager).

I would start with benchmarking. Government agencies often have rules for project governance. Use those as a starting point. While they often have many extra layers of bureaucracy, at least they provide a starting point for general categories and are helpful to ensure you didn't forget something big. That's going to be easier than a top-down or bottom-up requirements generation effort, especially for someone who has not done something similar before.

my understanding of business rules for project management would be a kind of PM policy including governance which includes statements like

- we define a project as of a minimum duration of xx weeks and a budget higher than yy
- each project needs a named sponsor and PM (accepting the roles & responsibilities defined later)
- each project starts with a business case approved by xxx and a charter indicating its existence, it concludes with a performance report
- a PMO gathers project data and presents a projects dashboard on a monthly basis
....

This policy would align the project language in the company and guardrail any processes and methods
