I recently got my CAPM certification in Feb 2022 and have been a project lead for a little over two years. I've had zero knowledge or education about project management. I learned on the job and by reading the PMBOK Guide.
I'd like to get my PMP certification in 5-6 years, but unsure of where and when to start recording project hours. The projects I lead/coordinate is fairly small... If anyone can please advise how to get started in prepping for PMP. I know I have a long way to go as I don't meet the prerequisites.
Any guidance is appreciated, thanks in advance! Saving Changes...

I don't think there is any issue with small projects, etc. The experience requirement is somewhat subjective but as long as you can show 36 months and have someone able to verify that (and able to describe your role in the application) you should be fine. Sounds like the two years of project lead experience will definitely count toward the 36 month requirement. Reading the PMBOK guide and taking a PMI authorized course (many options) should be sufficient in terms of knowledge for the exam.

Justin is right, Shannon. The type or size of projects don't matter. What is important is the work you do on those projects. Hopefully, you have a chance to cover all process groups in your projects.

Like my fellow colleagues mentioned, size of the project is irrelevant as well as the post. What matters are the activities you do on a day to day basis so if they are project management related, they count.
I don’t think you are that far and from what you mentioned above, I believe you can apply for the PMP in a year time.
Check the PMP handbook on PMI website and it will guide you as to how to record your experience.
Good Luck.
