Google. It quickly and easily finds a lot of information relevant to starting virtually any PM related search.

Free is challenging. There are a number of tools that start off free, but it doesn't take long to start needing the paid features or you spend a lot of time on creative integrations with other tools, doing things they weren't intended for.

Alternatively, there are tools, like Project Libre, that are always free, that provide some basic features, but you'll have to find a new tool to do "more". If you're looking for simple and free, Project Libre is a nice little box if you just need a basic task list and gantt chart.

Google Docs - collaboration, word processing, spreadsheets & presentation. Given that MS Office is the most commonly referenced PM information management toolkit, Google Docs would be the best free alternative.

i Think. Google Have best Free and simple. Alternatively you can try TRELLO, as far as i know it is free for individuals or teams looking to organize anything.

I see Project Libre is already referenced however I would like to add Gantt Project at https://www.ganttproject.biz/. It's similar to Project Libre but my experience is that it's a little more user friendly, and most comparison reviews rank Gantt Project just a little higher than Project Libre.

Thank you everyone. I thought I would get a notice on your replies, but I only saw when I logged in and searched. Not sure if this is a setting issue. I will check out Project Libre and Gantt Project. When you reference Google, is there a specific PM tool that is free that I can access? Our company is is a Google shop already and we are well-versed in Atlassian tools. However, I'm trying to create simple schedule with dependencies as the "architecture" for more detailed planning. As you can imagine, there are some obstacles in introducing any new tools. I might open another conversation specifically on this Atlassian (Confluence, Jira, etc.) limitations on front-end (quick) planning and roadmapping, but if there is another already in place, please let me know. Thank you.
