How do you get all project team members to have buy-in and ownership for project schedule dates? Looking for ways to developers to hold to their dates.

Who set the dates?
The best way to get ownership is if the team members work on the schedule together and set the dates, only then will they have ownership, otherwise they are just imposed.

I agree with Julie. We call the process 'Democratic Planning'. The developers themselves provide the estimates and start dates.

Clearly negotiation is sometimes needed but this helps them commit to the dates.

This then forms a fixed 'contract' between yourself as Project Manager and the developer.

Any potential variation needs to be discussed as soon as it looks likely to occur, giving the PM a chance to introduce preventative action to stop it occuring.

One way to enhance buy in (even if the team did not set the original dates) is to have them frequently project the completion dates of both individual tasks and the project as a whole. This will reinforce how individual efforts affect the overall outcome.
