Hello

I've been tasked with bringing all of my organisations projects and programmes together in a clear and understandable project portfolio plan. I'm not an expert in project portfolio plans and was wondering if anyone can anyone provide me with a good example of a project portfolio plan and offer advice on the best way of presenting in a visual format. I don't think I would use a GANTT chart for this - am I wrong?. Any help would be much appreciated as I need to pull together by Thursday lunchtime and don't know where to start!!!

Thanks in advance for any help or signposting you can give me.

Hello. I'm probably too late for your needs, but here are some thoughts. Portfolio planning is more than just start and stop dates of projects, but if that is all they want to see then a Gantt chart would do it. Simon Moore's book called Strategic Project Portfolio Management is a really good starting point for pulling together your portfolio.

I think you need to start at the beginning and find out what the requirements are for your organisation's project portfolio plan.

I am doing portfolio management for my organisation and key to them is the resource planning i.e do we have the resources to actually do the projects when we want to do them?

Other places look at risk, ROI, cost or any number of aspects of the portfolio. If you take a leaf of of financial portfolio management then try to have a balanced portfolio, do not do all high risk or cost projects at the same time etc.

There are a number of systems that can help demonstrate your potfolio but you need to first understand the aspects of the portfolio you want to manage.

Also try reading the Standard for Portfolio Management from PMI as a good start.
