Hello to all, this is my very first post on gantthead. Recently I graduated with a BS in CIS with the intention to break into project management. I have 5 years experience in risk management and I'm currently the Associate Director at a trade school down here in Florida. I am looking at getting the CAPM by October. Any advice as to how to break loose from the clutches of my current situation and into a PM role would be great.

Since it looks like you are in the Tampa Bay area, I would suggest you join PMI Tampa Bay chapter and attend the monthly meetings. Even if you don’t want to join yet, come to the next monthly meeting that will be August 15. This is a great forum to network and learn what opportunities are in the Tampa Bay area. There are many great resources on the website including info on the upcoming PMI Tampa Symposium. Website: http://www.pmi-tampabay.org/ Saving Changes...
I would love to meet PM's in the area and actually get sound advice than the normal "Just look around" advice that I typically get. Saving Changes...

Leon, good luck with your job hunt. Think about what elements of your current job are project-related - I'm sure there are some. These are the things to focus on when you apply for new jobs. Just keep at it - network and apply for lots of jobs! Saving Changes...
I would suggest looking in to being a business analyst, doing so is usually the first step in getting involved in projects. Once you get a break you may get a chance to run a project and depending on how you like it you may make a career out of it. Saving Changes...
