How effective was Gherkin in the way your team used it? My exposure to it (also not involving Cucumber) has been in the form of user acceptance scenarios for system behavior, with the potential for more than one scenario per story or feature, but I can see how it could also work in place of user stories.

The formality of the language helps frame the requirements in a manner that is straightforward and easy to implement. It doesn't do much for identifying all the scenarios: that's still something you have to do on your own.
