How do you discuss things in your daily coordination meetings?

Whether you are following Scrum or some other delivery method, short daily coordination events (e.g. daily scrums) can be an effective way of aligning everyone in the team.

Discussing incomplete work items is a common topic at such events but there are a few ways in which this can be done.

I'm running a one week poll to understand how often each of the common approaches is used and will share the results in my blog article a week from now.

Each person on the team reports past progress and tasks for the next day or two. At times, we may project out a week for visibility and coordination. Our morning calls involve several teams, not necessarily working on the same project however we have numerous shared resources. Our method allows for better coordination of deadlines and priorities within the entire organization.

I am not a proponent of the "daily" coordination meeting(s).
1) the meeting becomes the focus rather than the project
2) not always truthful
3) can lead to conflict
4) becomes forum for type 'A' personalities
5) consumes project time when you include preparation, documentation as well as meeting time.
6) inconvenient for some (prior commitments)
7) not much happens in a day on most projects - what happens when all say "nothing/little to report".
You can encourage coordination without meetings and in any case coordination should not be reliant on meetings. Coordination should happen when and as required, not put off until tomorrow's meeting. Some tasks/deliverables need more coordination than others - don't treat them all the same.

Agreed Peter -

The fixed cadence of Scrum events can be a detriment if the team continues to meet even if they are getting no value out of the meetings. More mature teams will move to a just-in-time approach with their events, whether those are retrospectives, formal reviews or coordination sessions.
