Hi everyone! I recently obtained the Google Project Management Certification, Coursera and I'm currently looking for employment as a PM. Every job is asking for experience. How can I get experience if I don't get hired as a Project Manager? Any suggestions?

You can start as PM assistant, PM intern, or practice PM as a technical expert, etc, and then be promoted to Project Management.

It's the eternal catch-22. As Abolfazl indicates, you need to get in on the ground floor of project management. Get yourself on a project, any project, any work. Once you are on a project, start talking to team leads and project leads about helping them.

Please note that few organizations would recognize the value of your Google Project Management certification. You may want to consider a better known certification such as PMI's Certified Associate in Project Management.

A project management certificate won’t help you much in landing a job. You definitely need experience and in order to gain experience you need to start in the right place.

I suggest you look for project coordinator role as a starter because you will get exposed hands-on to various aspects of project management.

I would disagree with Rami a bit. A certification *by itself* won't help you. I have learned that it is a screening filter in some HR departments. The job postings I see however usually specify a PMP so if you have a different cert, it will not match their keywords.

I find that one of the main values of the cert is demonstrating that your experience is portable. You don't just understand how things were done at your former employer. You understand the basics of standards across industry.

Keith, Yes of course I meant "by itself" but it is also worth mentioning that certifications are a proof that you have in-depth knowledge about certain field but by no means indicate that the person is actually capable of doing the job nor does it fully demonstrate that the individual is experienced.

Certifications combined with experience are a good receipe for success and certifications will help put you ahead of others in the line but won't help much on their own in landing you a job.

You can start as a Project Management assistant or Project Management Coordinator. Volunteer tasks in your PM Local Chapter also are a good form of acquiring experience.

Thank you, Veronica! I successfully created and managed an Amazon E-commerce store. I believe that's experience but not sure if employers recognize that as PM.

Hey Guys I’m working on the Google Coursera Project Management Certification as well, I don’t have project management experience but I have a lot of experience in operations management. Will that still count as experience? Will the combination of the certification and operations management experience help me land a PM role?
