Dear pm community. I have been a pm for 10+ years, I got the pmp certification 5 years ago. Many job offers ask for scrum masters, so i wonder, should i get a smc if i already have a pmp certification?
I downloaded the smbok and it appears it covers many of the trades covered in the pmbok. I consider the pmbok to be a very solid knowledge for project management and I am concerned that the smbok will confuse me or conflict with my current knowledge. Any thoughts or tips? Anyone with both certifications?

Sebastian -

Not sure what you mean by the smbok - are you referring to the Scrum Guide?

Without experience leading teams using adaptive approaches, getting any agile certification will be of limited value. Once you have some of that experience, you can then go for a higher level agile certification that requires both experience and education.

If you wish to learn agile fundamentals, I'd recommend an agnostic agile course (i.e. one which is not tied to a specific framework or method).

Thanks Kiron for your reply. Smbok is the scrum master book of knowledge. Taking what you said into consideration, is it beneficial to have both certifications?

I never knew there was a SMBOK. Would you tell me where I can get a copy, Sebastian?

I think that something like the DASM from PMI is a worthwhile cert if you are trying to promote your agile knowledge in your resume. It is not particularly difficult and provides 14 PDUs.

Depending on your current knowledge level, you may or may not learn much from the course, but it provides you the credentials that can help land you an interview.

Employers value certifications. You will get an interview call only if recruiting manager likes your resume. If your resume has the relevant education and experience then you are likely to get a call for the interview.

You can showcase your knowledge only after you get an interview call. Till that point, your certificates hold a lot of value.

Now coming to your specific question, CSM or any other agile certification will help you if you are already working in agile environment or are looking to get a job for managing agile projects.

I recommend you do the PSM I (Professional Scrum Master Level 1) - This is becoming very well known and I see it in lots of job postings.

There are three levels, of which level 1 is the foundational but in my opinion is a good start for you. You can visit scrum.org and check it out.

Good Luck.

Thank you Rami. After checking it out and comparing to the DASM, I think is the best course of action. I can prepare it myself and the exam is 150 usd while the DASM is 499 usd for the exam and course which is required.

If it helps to find a better job or your employer requires you to have one, then I will recommend it.

Regardless of the pricing, I personally think that PSM is the first best step for your scrum master journey. I took the same oath years ago. Good Luck.
