Predictive and adaptive are extremes along a continuum. Very few projects are suitable for a 100% adaptive or 100% predictive approach and hence the vast majority of projects ARE hybrid.

Hybrid could come in different flavors including mixing lifecycle phases, picking tools and techniques from each toolkit or using a different approach for completing different work streams or deliverables.

I use the agile daily standup questions in my waterfall high level status update with the project team. since adopting this strategy, I have managed to deepened trust and confidence among the team as the team sees my genuine efforts to continuously remove blockers which ensures timely delivery of deliverables.
