Hi guys, so I’ve been a financial advisor running my own company in the UK for the last 15 years and as the pandemic hit, offices being closed and all that, I decided it might be a good time to see what else was on offer while in the middle of a major renovation project. Came across PM and became very interested.

So being in my 40's now and trying to get my head back round to studying, I completed Prince2.

I’m yet to land my first project management role but I’ve set my goal as to become a Construction Project Management working somewhere in the Gulf states within 3-5 years.

Any suggestions please to move forward with what qualifications to study that would aid me in achieving my goals?

At the moment, i'm considering couple of options. One was to study BSc in Quantity Surveying then move into MSc Construction PM; two, BSc in Construction PM; three RICS Certificate in Construction PM.
Any advice would be very much appreciated. Please do let me know what your background is too.

In terms of role, I highly recommend you look for a project coordinator role with a general contractor so you acquire first hands-on experience on site and get exposed to the different parts of the managing construction projects.

Regarding studying, I am not sure a Bachelor or Masters will do you any good more than just putting you ahead of others in the line so my advise is to acquire experience and meanwhile work on getting your CAPM and then PMP and PMI-ACP. You already have a financial background and education I assume so now you need experience and industry specific certifications to supplement your experience with more knowledge.

Since you are based in UK, Prince 2 was a good first step.

Hope this helps and Good Luck.

I agree with Rami's thoughts as well. In addition, do a field/market scan of the available job openings in Construction PM and look at the minimum and desired requirements of the available jobs - both educational and experience. That will give you a realistic feedback on what is required by the job market.in the real world.
