What is your worst experience as a project manager and how did you get out of it?

Julien,
I can imagine how bad it is for a human soul to be trapped in a zombie body. You seriously need a change.

Sonya,

I couldn't agree with you more that having a bad sponsor is suicidal. Now, how can we get out of it? The problem is we do not have a choice on the sponsor, do we?

Julian, let me agree. When I have discovered I am no longer using my real PM skills, it's time to make a change. We lose what we do not use....
Life is too short for work to suck.

My answer is "it depends". If you work in a PMO where you can request a different assignment, the options are easy. If you are a high level contracted program manager, you have to be far more clever and creative since your pay may depend on completion or maintaining that relationship. I have believed for years the PM toolbox is missing a contract specifically between the Sponsor and the PM to define acceptable practices, limitations, & exclusions.

I was given an ill-conceived, ill-defined project and everybody knew it but the executive sponsor. The only real questions were how far this fiasco would go before it collapsed in failure and what would be consequences.
