Other Certifications Counting as PDUs

Good Day all,

I have a rather interesting question. I'm hoping to obtain my PMP designation this Saturday. Through my current position, I will also begin working towards obtaining my CMPIC Masters of Configuration Management Certification within the next year. Does anyone know if the courses taken to earn the CMPIC designation could possibly translate into PDUs for PMI under Ways of Working, Business Acumen, or possibly both?

I have noticed that there is a strong correlation between Configuration Management and Project Management, and was honestly curious if PMI would consider the training as valid PDUs.

So long as they are relevant to any of the legs of PMI's Talent Triangle, you can certainly submit them. It is easier if the training provider & course are registered with PMI via the ATP program as those PDU submissions would never be challenged, but as long as you have reference materials (e.g. agenda, proof of completion, course outline) to support your submission then you should be fine.

I totally agree with Kiron. I’ve done this before for non-PMI courses and credentials and as long as the content is relevant then you should be fine claiming those PDUs.

Configuration management will fall in the technical leg of project management. While courses with an accredited school should meet those requirements, you can only count 20 technical PDUs per year. A typical university course is 12 weeks x 3 hours per week, so you will max out your technical requirement with one course for a calendar year.

Hi Keith,

Can you provide me with the link where the technical PDUs max out at 20 per year? I've only been able to find 60 PDUs to keep the PMP, with a minimum of 8 from each of the 3 sides of the triangle. I see there's a limit of 20 PDUs to apply for the next cycle if you go over 60, and only within the last year, upon earning them for the current 3-year cycle.

I was just curious if the courses will apply at all. My first course will be on SAE-EIA-649C during the last week of October of this year, and is indeed 20h total learning time. The remaining 5 courses will be taken in 2023.

Jessica,
I was thinking the same thing regarding where you can find from PMI what the minimum PDU requirements are for each leg of the triangle, and where you can find your current status with respect to each.

It looks like PMI, in their infinite wisdom has changed both the annual requirements and the dashboard. It looks like I misspoke, but after some hunting, here are the current requirements for PDUs. https://www.pmi.org/certifications/certifi...in/requirements

Your CM class should qualify. A large portion of my career has involved implementation of CM software and associated processes in an engineering environment. I agree there is a lot of crossover with PM. Since change management is one of the 4 fundamental pillars of config management, and PM is devoted to the planning and implementation of change I would challenge anyone to argue how it is NOT directly applicable to what they now call Ways of Working (apparently to align better with their Disciplined Agile branding).

I agree with Kiron, you should submit the PDU's, and attend for PMI approbation. I haven't heard about the 20 technical PDUs limit per year, maybe Keith can provide us the link of this PMI indication...

Thanks Everyone for the input! Here's hoping I succeed in passing the exam this Saturday and will be able to start earning my PMP PDUs.
