Has anyone been a part of one of these projects to install electric vehicle charging stations?
I am in the early stages of prepping the project and am having to review the scope of work, but wondering if there are any particulars, as it relates to chargers, to be aware of on the front end. Saving Changes...

As Abolfazi I have not however I have followed the EV introduction over the last few years as general interest. It seems to me that one of the issues with charging stations is standardisation. Does one cater to a specific manufacturer or group of manufacturers or provide some sort of universal hook-up. The second issue I would consider is level of chargers - does one provide slow chargers for few people (over night) or fast chargers for quick turn around (service centres)? Next on the agenda is the load requirements - a large number of fast chargers puts a heavy load on the electrical grid - is there capacity or are we looking at major infrastructure upgrades?
I believe that business case and project management techniques, including risk assessment, will get you through this. You will need a subject matter expert (SME).

Hi Peter, I appreciate you taking the time to get me some feedback. I'm beginning to understand some of the specifics you listed, but have still retained the assistance of our SME as this gets very deep, very quick. The upgrades are expected based on the site, so we're aware of it upfront thankfully. I'm still going to build it into my Risk Register to document it.

As an EV owner, I can say that some of the considerations of such a project are:
1. Location - is it conveniently located and are there enough places within walking distance for someone to use while their vehicle is charging
2. Capacity - how many stations and how do you handle surge times?
3. Resilience - will there be renewable sources of energy in the event of power outages?
4. Security - how will you prevent EVs from getting ICEd?
5. Customer support - how will that be handled and how will payment be processed?

I think you'll be happy to hear that the site locations are actually being chosen based on a site of extensive criteria, but one of them is location and accessibility to shops and what not so that the customer can choose to run errands while charging. Capacity will be based on the size and location of the site. Resilience is a little bit tricky, but there are two solution options available to us for this project to manage that risk. Security is a great point from several perspectives. We are going to require that there is a covered area for the chargers, adequate lighting in the lot, and even security monitoring. I really like your point regarding customer support. The chargers are going to have a payment system right at the charger, but I have not heard how we are going to handle customer support for issues on the ground.
