I've been considering PMP Certification for some time now, however I've been stopped each time I do by the expense of the membership (I just finally renewed after a couple of years) and the prohibitive cost of the exam. Is having the three letters (PMP) really worth it? Can someone explain to me the ROI? Also, second question: I'm curious where all this money goes and what PMI does with it? Saving Changes...
PMI does use some of its reserves for its research programs, advocacy efforts, and philanthropic pursuits such as scholarships.
However, it is sitting on a fairly sizable reserve for the size and nature of the association...
As far as ROI goes, that is something only you can answer. If NOT having the PMP means you won't get a promotion or a chance at a new job, then it likely is worth the expense. On the other hand, if it won't help your career prospects in the short term, the payback period will be prolonged...

I can't add much to Kiron's feedback as I totallu agree with everything he said. However, if you look at the exam costs for other organizations, they are about the same as those of PMI, if not more so in terms of pricing fairness, they are within the range compared to others. This is my personal opinion.

If your company won't assist with paying, you can claim both the PMI membership dues and the the PMP exam on your taxes. You should also be able to claim the course as part of the Canada Training Credit as well: https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/se...-can-claim.html

Is the PMP really worth it? That will vary by job market and company. People have told me they've gotten PM jobs without a PMP, although they had other PM certifications or significant experience. I've gotten jobs that I wouldn't have been considered for if I didn't have my PMP.
For the most part, if you want to work in the USA, the PMP will give you an advantage. Outside of the USA, that's not always the case. From the very brief research I've done, the PMP is preferred in the USA, Canada, Australia, and Middle East. Saving Changes...

When I got my PMP (2003), I was working for then EDS, which was a service company later bought by HP. I was the "product" my company was trying to sell to clients or projects.
Getting my PMP, helped my company selll this "product". Saving Changes...
