Hi there. I was told recently that I needed Errors and Omissions Insurance (known as E and O or Professional Insurance). Does PMI offer this to its members or can anyone shed some light on this? Many thanks. Saving Changes...
I don't believe PMI has any such offerings, but it is possible that some PMI chapters might. PMI Toronto is one of the largest chapters in the world so it would be worth asking the membership team if such a service is offered. I know that when I was actively leading projects on contract many years ago, I'd had to purchase such insurance myself separately...

Some professional organizations may offer E&O coverage but typically do so through a third party insurance company. I would start with your general insurance company or broker.

I have done this but it seems to be very specific to the industry you're working in. As a PM I have worked with clients all over the world in many different industries. There seems to be no blanket insurance for PMs operating this way, which to me would be the most common. Very strange for sure.

Personally, I haven’t heard of such insurance offered by PMI. Saving Changes...

Apologies if this is stuff you already know....
It is a very good idea to carry both Business Insurance (General Liability) and E&O (professional liability) if you are an independent consultant regardless of whether or not it is a requirement of a specific engagement contract. The costs of defending yourself from even trivial claims can be extremely high and adverse judgements can have a significant impact on your financial well-being. I appreciate that this insurance is a good risk mitigation strategy, plus it's generally a tax-deductible business expense.
In addition to insurance for the typical risks covered by the insurance policy, the form of your business (e.g. sole proprietorship, LLC, S- or C- Corp, etc.) has a significant bearing on your personal asset exposure in event of losing a law suit.
Your home/auto insurance company may do Business Insurance but not E&O insurance. If not, they usually have an affiliated company that covers these types of risks. Be prepared to answer questions from the underwriters about the type of consulting you do, experience, prior claims, etc. which will impact your rates.
You may never have a Business/E&O claim but like fire insurance on your house, if you need it you'll be very very glad to have it.

I would never need general liability as no one visits my home, etc. and I do not employ any one.
E & O seems to be the one I need but no "all industry coverage" that I am aware of.

Any chance you may cause damage on/to a client's or third party's property?
