I am looking for some good sources on contracts, particularly relating to project contracts. I work for a internet development company, so contracts come up a lot in my job--but I can't find much about managing them effectively. Saving Changes...
Kevin, you manage vendors the same way you manage internal project teams by insisting on a project plan, periodic deliverables and reviews, and demanding the same level of performance as I know you would from any other internal functional area. As for researching contracts, checkout these websites: FindLaw.Com, FindForms.Com, Law.Com, and Lawguru.com. These sites an be quickly accessed from my website's Bookmarks section, MoneyWords.Com Saving Changes...

Thanks, Tom.
To be more specific, I'm looking for references on the specific problems of contract management as distinct from project management in general. I'll take a look at the specific references you mentioned.
My problem is that I feel that for those project managers that have to deal with contracts and subcontracts in particular, the PMBOK is severely inadequate. More than any other, I feel a little out of my depth in this area (as a note, I am a PMP and teach project management at a community college). Saving Changes...
Kevin, you're right, contract management is a whole field unto itself, when I lived in Los Angeles, UCLA Extension program had certification courses on contract management and I'm sure there's a wealth of books available on this subject, so keep looking...Tom Saving Changes...
Kevin, Do a search on any search engine for "contract management". You'll find references to national contract managers associations. Some of these web sites have lots of reference material, because they administer certification exams. I'm sorry I don't have any URL's to pass on. I did investigate the very topic last year and found lots of material on web sites. Saving Changes...

I don't know if this is helpful to you, but I have available free an Excel spreadsheet that is designed for developing project budgets. It is specifically targeted for IT service companies, but is fairly generic and may be relevant. It is available in the Tools area of www.westfordconsulting.com Saving Changes...

Clear distinction between PM and CM is where the activities/workloads of both heavily take place. It appears that both interact however loads for PM increase at Project Execution the phase called Contract Administration from CM point of View. Loads for CM increase at Pre-award activities Soliciting and Tendering phase called by PM point of View. So CM main involvement is in Bidders Selection, Tendering, Tech and Comm. Eval of bids til Award of contract. Any commercial legal and financial issues involved onward will be the CM responsibility otherwise it solely PM work. Hope this is helpful
