A year in a review…

I started my 2022-year review reflection exercise, an activity that I usually do, to evaluate what went well , what went wrong, and decide on the next year's resolutions and things to achieve. I do this activity as a holistic approach, looking at work, family, community, volunteering, individual growth, etc...

One of the tools that I use is PMI’s code of ethics and its 4 values (Responsibility, Respect, Fairness, Honesty) to benchmark myself.

I am curious to know if you use this code in a similar activity or maybe you use it in a different way ?!

Please share your thoughts and let me know how you personally use PMI’s Code of Ethics and professional conduct.

Looking forward to your thoughts, community of project managers...

Gretta,

we make about 35.000 decisions every day and the vast majority unconsciously. Ethical values can influence my decisions if I manage to create habits and automatic reflections around them.

So it is important to meditate about values and positive things to achieve, as we will train our brain with that, so they come naturally to support us. It also helps to be part of a community and partnerships which think about the same values and positive outcomes.
As such it is a continuous, daily exercise to reflect on ethical behaviour. Notwithstanding the strive to do a stocktake at regular intervals.

Many people think about negative things and fears every day, often in dichotomies, and then inevitably those will shape our decision making.

Gretta -

I consider year-end reviews to be as useful as phase or project-end ones. I prefer to take time to reflect regularly throughout the year and course correct as required.

PMI's COE and professional conduct actually serves as a beacon in the execution of our PM assignment. Opportunities to trespass the COE abound, but the PM must be ready always to uphold it

I always reflect on my year by year end and prepare for next year. PMI code of ethics is applicable in every aspect of our life because we always have to conduct ourself within those ethical parameters.

Thanks, Gretta. You have brought up a good point that reminds us (if not already aware) of a tool to use for our year-end reflections. I use the 4 values of PMI's Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct to examine how the year had been through the lens of these values.

I use it to plot and reflect on some key decisions or activities that I have made or taken and then check on areas where I could have done better only if that activity was in my scope or sphere of control. I often find myself feeling low of things that are outside the purview of my scope of work (personal life too). The 4 values are a good filter to use in my opinion.

Thanks Gretta,

Having PMI's code at our disposal to provide a 'compass' for decision making is incredibly helpful, both in our professions but also our personal lives.

Extending the code, as a Life and Business coach; to assist in managing global transformations, I use the Coaching Life wheel to gauge how I am doing in the aspects of my life, including career; to pause and reflect on situations and as we plan for 2023.

This really helps to have a more purpose-filled approach.

I usually look back and see what I have learned in terms of business acumen, people management, and company culture/bureaucracy and how all of these things impact the projects/goals at an individual level and a team level.

At a team level, I encourage the team to identify what did we excel at, where we could have done better and what should our target area be for the next year. This helps us define our OKRs as well.

I also go one level further and see what tools I have learned in the past year as it is important to stay current with the ever-changing technology.
