Hello there, I am trying to make a career change into project management. I have experience in front-line patient care, getting others trained/certified (insurance and medical interpreting) and administration. I want to gain experience in the field, but most of the positions I am seeing, ask for some sort of PMP cert to be hired onto the team. I would love to join a team as an assistant to a pm but I am not sure if this even exists. Is there some entry level position/title I can search for that would allow me to gain the experience without having the cert?

First of all, my recommendation is not wasting time trying to get CAPM certification. Go directly for PMP certification. The point here is, to apply, you have to demostrate the needed time working in the role. So, read the certification handbook carefully, go for PMI´s customer care support when you do not understand something, and then make your own strategy.

For those that are new to the project management field, get this PMI certification: Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)® . Many of our staffing clients will consider the CAPM certification when hiring for less complex projects. They are looking for a basic understanding of the PMI Methodology and some familiarity with the PMI terms and procedures. As you gain experience, then get your PMP.

As mentioned above, volunteering might open doors and gain you experience.
But you can also search for positions such as:
- Project Coordinator
- Project Analyst
- Assistant Project Manager
- Junior Project Manager
- Project Scheduler

Most of the time, these roles will be on the administrative side of PM, usually shadowing a more senior, experienced PM that will help with gaining more insight into the job. As you seem to have experience in the administrative side, showcase those skills.
You can also try to search for positions in
your industry/domain as a Training Project Manager where you might manage certain training/learning projects.
