US Membership Price Increase email

I received an email from PMI with the following:
"Starting on 3 January 2023, dues for US members will be updated by $10 to $139 per year. Please refer to the following details to learn why PMI is updating our member pricing and how this change will help us deliver enhanced member programs globally.

Impact of the changes:
This price change is the first increase in over ten years and is part of a larger fair pricing initiative established by PMI to address economic equality for our diverse global community.

• This initiative aims to holistically address fair and equitable pricing for membership and PMI products globally.
• In addition to membership rate change, we will implement location-based pricing for some of our key products worldwide"

I'm confused by the wording and the lack of transparency here. I don't understand what the fair pricing initiative is and what the meaning of "economic equality" is in this context. In addition, the vague "fair and equitable pricing" elicits more questions than answers. It's fair enough to say we are increasing pricing because we haven't increased pricing in 10 years, but to justify it with undefined, vague wording and refencing an unknown policy leads to more questions.

Thanks for letting me know. I'll be on the lookout for it! I'll post it on this site if I see and then, perhaps we can have some dialogue to see how the money is being spent and the justification for the increase. Please don't get me wrong. I don't mind an increase unless it's justified.

I am also wondering how and if this will affect Canadian residents membership pricing.

Given the current US-CAD exchange rate, PMI should really be giving us a break on membership fees as our actual costs have increased purely from a currency exchange perspective!

Not to mention, the fact that they are collecting GST/HST on our general (not Chapter) membership is interesting. I sure hope our Federal government is seeing that tax revenue returned to them!

Even with the increase, I find membership well worth the cost. I am hoping they do not start adjusting the discounts on products and services for members as that is where the real value come in. Great conversation and input from others!

Michael, it is but like Kiron mentioned, the cost for those of us living in Canada has increased a lot due to the inrease in the currency exchange rate ($1 USD = $1.4 CAD when you make a purchase, if not more) and on top of that there is GST so I agree with Kiron, PMI should be giving us a bit of a break as part of their "ecomomic equality" initiative.

Dear David
This change in prices is in line with the bewilderment that the PMI is currently experiencing.

Does it also contain something like: "If you renew now you can benefit from the old prices"?

It gets to be hilarious

As a chapter leader 10 years ago, the Chapter was a cash cow averaging about $100k per year, saving at least $200k in reserves. I always preached that we're a non-profit and that excess money should be put back into the community or membership to reduce costs. I would love to see the financials to justify the increase and, as most of you stated, to understand what "fair and equitable" means or what is comparable.
Dear francisco

I am convinced that PMI has never made as much money as it does today

Have they also substantially increased salaries and fringe benefits for Executive Leadership Team members?

Hello fellow community members and Happy New Year! I want to thank you for expressing your concern in regard to the “US Membership Price Increase” email sent from PMI on 27 December 2022. We shared your key questions/sentiments with internal stakeholders who were able to provide answers, listed below:

Does this price increase apply for Canada?
No, the price increase for Individual Membership and the non-member PMP exam fee is only for those professionals located in the United States. It will not impact professionals located in Canada.

What is the fair pricing initiative and what does PMI mean by “economic equality” or “fair and equitable pricing” in this context?
It means that our prices will differ based on location moving forward. Like many global organizations, PMI proactively assesses barriers to entry for our community members around the world using global economic data provided by World Bank. The fair pricing initiative is PMI’s first step in a long-term plan to provide more equitable opportunities for professionals to learn project management skills.

What do we need to know about the fair pricing initiative?
We shared news of the fair pricing initiative with our U.S. members to be transparent. While prices for Individual Membership and the non-member PMP exam fee have increased in the U.S., it is likely that U.S. members or PMP candidates may see or hear about other professionals receiving lower prices. We recognize how connected our community is, and wanted to be upfront about this.

Who do I contact for specific questions?
For specific questions, please contact Customer Care, as questions cannot be answered within this thread.

Thank you again for being such dedicated and engaging members of PMI’s community!

This is helpful, thank you for addressing the concerns. Regarding the pricing, we hope PMI looks at reducing the pricing for Canada as with the high exchange rate, we are paying 40%.
