Is it possible to have a metadata layer between the database and the BI tool? I've got users who connect directly to various databases for reports, and DBA's who are afraid to reorganize their databases for fear of breaking the reports. Is it possible to give the users a metadata layer to write their reports to, and give the DBA's one metadata layer they are responsible for maintaining a connection to?

Yes, absolutely, if you use nQuire. nQuire presents a "logical database" that you can query directly (using a browser/point and click) or using SQL (directed at the logical database). The layer of metadata and a an application server in the middle make this possible.
