Ever heard that a Project Manager is one who can manage anything apart from personal life?

Well this is me. Appreciate ideas on your strategies to be excellent at Project work and Life Work.

PS: Only reply if you got life figured out :-). Kidding.

While projects have a start and end, project management can feel like there are no boundaries. No matter how much effort you put in, most of the time there will always be something else you can do for the project.

However, doing so is modeling the wrong type of behavior for your team.

One way to combat this is to address it as a working agreement with the team that work on the project, especially responding to communications only happens during certain hours and not on weekends.

Keep in mind that your assignment, and the team's assignment is to deliver the project not achieve perfection. Yes, it can always be done more effectively (not only in your mind but also with the armchair quarterback [your boss?]) but doing it better may not be to the benefit of the project as it may involve too much effort.

I'm not saying "expect less", I'm saying achieve the objective - no less, no more.

becoming more resilient and wise is at the core of managing your life.
And if you are stressed out, you will not be a good leader for your team and your project will suffer. But if you are balanced, ethical, listening, your team will work for you.

What to do?
1. get a mentor
2. read and learn about emotional intelligence, resilience, wisdom
3. change who you are, develop yourself
4. develop your ethical values

While life may have a definite starting and end point, it's so much more than a project.

If you equate the individual with an organization, you could say that the individual will have a better chance at success if they have the following:

- a vision and mission that they stick to - they walk the talk
- interests, activities, commitments, hobbies, projects, etc... that align with the vision and mission and are prioritized appropriately

At one point, I had four different hobbies I was trying to pursue, and made little progress on any of them. I had to stop most of them to make meaningful progress on one of them, and I was better off for it. I found that good things can distract you from better things. Take the time to prioritize the interests, activities, commitments, hobbies, projects, etc., in your life. Balancing a scale involves more than just removing things from the scale; it's making sure the right things are being balanced.

Think that life is a project/program too. Each people in this world perform project management from the time they wake up to the time they go to bed. The level of formality could be different when they have to apply it inside organizations.

You have to remember that project management is about getting things done. Are you doing, rather than getting things done?

Time Management is a good strategy to equilibrate work-life, attaining a good balance between our activities, and satisfying our personal needs in a manner that compensates all aspects of our lives.

Indeed. We all have 24hours, but how we use it matters more.

While I don't create New Years resolutions, I do spend time strategizing where I want to spend my effort each year. That will include mind, body, soul, professional, and one or more categories that I really want to focus on even if it's a subset of those.

I'll have more or less formal plans for big things I want to accomplish, and as I plan my time, having those categories reminds me of whether I am focusing too much on one area to the detriment of others. As they say, all work and no play makes Keith a dull boy.

Agree with Stephane here.

If a project management and a balance to have a life stresses, you out, it is important to take a look at yourself. Introspect, see what the problem is, find the root cause and resolve it.

Outside of work, like what Kieth says, find out something that interests you and keeps you engaged. It may be yoga, meditation, sports, museums, hobbies, politics or whatever.
Most of all find a purpose. This must help you.

And Thomas has some good advice too!

Strategy is to develop a routine. Predicibility matters. Do what you say and say what you do. Don't overdo. Push back things if you get more than what you can handle. And figure out LIFE and its purpose. It can be done only by you !
