Do PMI certifications have the same value around the world?
Do PMI certifications have the same value around the world?

The cost of applying for exams is quite different.

Examples for members:
- PMP 405.00 versus 364.00
- CAPM 225.00 versus 158.00
- ACP 435.00 versus 305.00

And so on!

Who will have started this mess?

Is this perhaps part of their "fair pricing" initiative as they used to have a single US & Euro price (405/340) regardless of location for the PMP?

This is also somewhat similar to the geography-based pricing they are charging to ATPs for courseware royalties. It is much higher if you are in North America than if you are in some other continents, for example.

As to who started it, I'm guessing the idea originated from customer support given the amount of feedback they will have received about the high pricing for regions that have an unfavorable local currency exchange rate relative to the USD.

Dear Kiron
I understand perfectly what you are saying

It would be the same as having differentiated prices (worldwide) for Louis Vuitton or Christian Louboutin products.
Unless I've been wrong for 10 years :-) (I admit I do...)

Price, in marketing, is a fundamental element for positioning (we are talking about strategy, of course...)

The Project Management courses promoted by Google, which have a price of 1,249.00 at Christmas, were the subject of a promotion. The price charged in this promotion was 49.97.
Right now, google has almost as many members certified as project managers as does PMI.

What is the value of Google Project Management certifications?

PMI is a far cry from what it was...to my great sadness!

Agree with Kiron, fair pricing has been demanded since at least 15 years and seems to be coming now. It took so long because there are some hurdles to solve (e.g. can you handle different currencies) and pilots in different countries were run.

Often mentioned as example was the big mac index

Fair pricing does not mean transparent pricing.
One of the targets is to increase sales in regions with low income.

Dear Thomas
I understand that, at PMI, they want to increase sales at any price

When we are talking about positioning (an important element when thinking in terms of strategy) what conclusion can we draw?
They did the same with the membership fees and yesterday Kimberly commented and provided further clarity on this initiative.

To be honest, I am not sure how I feel about this. Maybe I am neutral for now because you could be living in the US or Canada, but your financial situation is not good so if the certification and membership price is high, the economic equality or fair pricing initiative will not help that individual. It’s a double edged sword.

Dear Rami
I completely understand what you are feeling.

Rami is one of the people who seriously invested in your personal development and PMI certifications

Realizing that certifications don't have the same value in the world, it must be a harsh reality

Luis, thank you. Just so I better understand, when you say value, you mean cost, right?

Dear Rami
One of the elements for the perception of value (but not only) is the cost
There are other elements that must be taken into account for what is called value
How much do people (companies and/or organizations) value PMI certifications? How much are they willing to pay for these certifications? Will they react in the same way when they learn that the price varies from country to country?

My experience with nearly all the organizations I've worked with is that those that will subsidize their staff attaining a certification won't be too concerned about regional cost differences. With the PMP, many companies prefer to have their staff take a prep course which would be significantly more expensive than the application fee.

While there are better credentials out there for project management, none have achieved the mind share of the PMP, so it will continue to be of value as a foundational credential.

Kiron
I would say there should be a kind of fair pricing in place. I myself have not checked the new prices.

Dear Abolfazl
What does fair pricing mean when we're talking about strategy?
What is the risk of the brand and its products losing value?
