What can be attributed to the drop in the number of members and the low growth in the number of PMP and PMI-ACP certified people?
It was found, compared to December 2021:

- A 3.04% drop in the number of members

- A 9.25% growth in the number of PMI-ACP certifications

- A 3.37% growth in the number of PMP certifications

Is it too early to draw conclusions or could this weak growth in the number of PMP and PMI-ACP certified people be a consequence of PMI's departure from the strategic focus?

Luis -

the drop in members is somewhat seasonal/cyclical. A lot of folks join PMI to benefit from the cheaper PMP certification costs and drop their membership after the first year.

Arguably, the PMP market is getting saturated - not sure there are that many folks left (compared to ten years ago) who are pursuing it.

Not surprised about the ACP - once one has the PMP, going for the ACP makes a lot of sense for many folks as it is framework/toolkit agnostic.

Dear Kiron
Thank you for your comment.

The variation in terms of number of members is annual, i.e. homologous.

In your opinion can we draw some conclusions or is it premature?
Hi Luis

I do not draw conclusions from the numbers of one month, many global developments contribute, like the PMP development in China we do not know a lot about but its the largest market now, a drop after Corona, increasing sanctions locking out countries.

I know you are looking for reasons in the behaviour of PMI's leadership. And I can assure you that those numbers are driving PMI leadership actions.

In general, my take is what is more important for PMI, members, PMPs (and ACPs, DAx etc) or volunteers? Low membership could very well result in impact and relevance. Low volunteerism not. Low certificates indicate a product and relevancy problem.
All this should be considered by PMI and taken care of.

Dear thomas
Thank you for your comment.

The comparison is not monthly but annual.

Homologous variation.

I'm not looking for anything.

Just looking at the data and asking if we can draw some conclusions.

Honestly... I don't have much faith in world leaders in general.

I would even say, we live in a leadership crisis.

No wonder the Principles and Values that govern humanity are being trampled.

It's from the books...The first thing they do is change the prices :-)

But, I'm sure of one thing: if we compare it with the strategy, for now, we can consider that the implementation is being a flop... or was it the conception?

It certainly is more meaningful as an annual change, but I'd be interested in seeing the data over a longer time period such as a decade to draw any conclusions.

As Thomas has indicated, I do believe that PMI leadership considers membership growth and retention to be important so I doubt they'd miss a steady downward trend.

Dear Kiron
We agree that an analysis based on medium and long-term data allows us to have a view of trends

Despite the fact that the new strategy dates back to 2021 and the major changes in the PMI have occurred in the last three years

It seems to me that reflection should focus on this period of time

The PMBOK Guide 7th Edition was published in July 2021 and, accordingly, the proposed development approaches and the role of the project manager in the PMI vision

Even the talent triangle was changed, now having more "sexy" names and, at the same time, more empty of content

It is clear that they are doing something to see if what happened this year is reversed.
What are you doing?
The traditional one with a price change :-)
I do totally agree with Kiron and Thomas. Don't forget the tight financial conditions as well which could have led to this slow down in PMP and Memberships decline.

Kiron, check Stephane's excel sheet that he provided, it has the info from Dec 2020.

Dear Rami
Thanks for participating in this reflection.
Based on your argument, it occurs to me to ask:
- Why is it that the number of people who are certified in other certifications has grown by two digits?

I'd suggest that the double digit growth relates to the fact that those other credentials have had very slow growth so even a modest absolute increase in numbers will reflect as a significant percentage increase.
I agree with Thomas and Kiron.
