Creating a Daily Standup template requires the three questions asked during the meeting which include;
1. What I did yesterday
2. What I will be doing today
3. Are there any blockers?

Hum, this is an interesting and confusing question.

Another interesting one would be: "Why do you wnt to create a template for the daily Standup?"

A Daily Standup is a informal dicussion that is supposed to answer the 3 questions listed by Christiana. It is not supposed to be a meeting with a formal agenda and meeting minutes.

During the Daily Standup you focus on the communication, not on keeping notes of it.

So I am confused. What would be the point of a template?
Hello Patrice, the aim of my question is to share my view and also understand the views of the seasoned professionals regarding having a template for a Daily stand-up. The outcome of this template is to build consistency and a point of reference if the team chooses to do so.

Christiana -

Consistency is not required for a daily coordination event. It is expected that the nature and focus of the discussions within a team will evolve over time as what is important to their work evolves.

Similarly, consistency between teams is not needed either. One team might want to focus solely on impediments whereas another might spend their time on intra-team dependencies.

What is valuable is to provide examples on ways to structure the event with pros and cons so that the team can decide if any of those provide a good starting point.

here is how a PM from Ukraine adapted their retrospective template when the war started.

Templates are like habits, important to be able to focus energy on content not process.

Last 24 hours, next 24 hours, any blockers and who can assist to get those blockers removed?

Note: We should never ask completion percentage, rather we can ask, when can get the current task done?

As was mentioned, a standup is a check point to talk about the state of the state and determine blockers. I personally don't like the 3 questions. I prefer to walk through the backlog for the current sprint. Especially if you have multiple people working on one user story (say you have front end, API and QA all have associated tasks or dependent functionality).

Rather than people talking in silos or people talking over each other you focus on the work at hand. You have a prebuilt meeting agenda - use it.

I would say that creating a template will keep the team focused. There are many examples of daily meetings that should last 5 mins going into discussions.Having an agenda doesn't mean that you ignore the team's input in the meeting. My team always knew who would go first, 2nd, 3rd, etc. they come prepared for the meeting, after they finish the "official" part, then it is time for open questions. Each meeting should have an agenda, so the participants know what the out take will be, and of course - keep notes, this will guide your memory through the whole development process and you will start noticing blockers early.

You can also use the templates from Miro.io , which provide interactive and fun guidance to use in your Daily Stand Up meetings. They have a bunch of templates for this purpose. Something interactive and fun and innovative when running your Daily Stand Up meetings is always welcome.

While the meeting has to important three questions.

Here are additional tips.

Meetings should be short – aim for no more than 15 minutes.
Have the daily standup at the same time and place everyday for consistency.
Meet where the work happens – don’t waste time trying to coordinate extra rooms. In front of your Kanban board is ideal.
All team members should attend.
Meetings should not be postponed if someone is late or can’t make it.
