Hi All, I'm currently in a role as a program manager and I'm being asked to look into certifications. It seems PgMP requires project management experience first. I have led many projects and programs but I've never seeked a PMP. Should I start with PMP cert and then work towards PgMP at a later time or go straight to PgMp?

Go straight to PgMP. PMP is all about projects and its execution using Scrum,Waterfall,Agile etc at the project level. But given your profile and experience, I would go for PgmP which focusses more on Strategy and it execution of related projects or programs so that you get the required benefits for your organization that it is looking for.

It really depends on the purpose for seeking a certification. The PgMP is not well recognized so while it is more appropriate for your current role, if you look to switch jobs, the PMP has much greater marketability.

Since you are currently working in this role and the organization asked you to look into certifications then PgMP is a more suitable credential for your role and while PMP is more recognized globally, yet, it is limited to managing projects, not programs or portfolios.

You will need either Project Management experience (which you have) or a PMP in addition to Program Management experience and if you have the required expeirence, I don't see any issue from eligibiltiy point of view to apply for the PgMP.

If you end up pursuing the PgMP first, it would be wise to pursue the PMP as well at some point afterwards.

Hope this helps!

I would say it depends on your career plan and job market.

If you have enough Project Management experience, it will be easy to go for PMP first, since it's the basis of knowledge for managing projects. Then, you can go for the PgMP, which is the credential you need for your actual role. PMP knowledge will stand with you for the future, and it's valuable for any role.
