If you have a number of projects to deliver, then work on the principle that you need to give yourself and work-package leads time to prepare before the meeting - the rest is based on resource availability (people/rooms/conf phones etc).

None. In our organization, project status is reported via email and updated into MS Project. I do not need a meeting to find out if someone is 25% completed with a task, etc...
Nothing sucks more that going around the room and having everybody report on what they did. Can easily be done via email.
We do have project meetings, but to discuss issues and tasks coming up that could have high risks involved. Saving Changes...

While I am the first to bag out of meetings whenever possible, simply knowing someone is 25% percent done with a task only tells a bit of the story. Status meetings are great for sorting through issues and bringing minds together. I don't feel that status updates can be solely accomplished via email.
That being said, I never schedule status meetings to last more than 30 minutes. Anything longer has to be "justified" (in other words, you better whine pretty loud to get a longer than 30 minute meeting). Saving Changes...
