Most people transition to managerial role with a broader scope internally within their company. This happens through someone at the top sponsoring and advocating them for their promotion.

But for someone who is not fortunate to find an internal sponsor, how can a career transition to managerial role accomplished?. If anybody has done it, it would be great if they could share their experience and the path they took

In general, without internal sponsorship, the path I've seen is to take on team lead roles working under a manager and when that manager moves into their next role, you are in a good position to apply for their role.

It does help if you can show that you have gained managerial experience both on the job (e.g. work package/stream lead) or in voluntary initiatives.

However, sometimes it is easier to move into such roles externally (i.e. leave your company and jump to another one) where there might be more opportunities without having a supportive sponsor.

I earned my first management job, at the tender age of 19, by cramming on management theories and practices. At the interview, I was able to answer management questions reasonably well. Sometimes you have to fake it until you make it.
