Perhaps I did not understand your point, but generally speaking the same than other industries. Just to comment, in my last work place, I was in charge on run programs related to implement what some people call manufacturing 4.0 which is put focus on full automate all the activities which are recurrent activities.
Project management will be involved in the development of a new product, the initial setup of the assembly line and manufacturing system (people/process/tools) and any major changes to the product or the manufacturing process.
The changes brought about through projects will affect the standard procedures and processes used by operational teams.
Project Management will help with the development of new products. In the operational lines, the contribution would be to create new processes to be complied, and continuous improvement project initiatives.
I worked at the Rolls-Royce plant in Montreal. ISO-compliant, the company drove change through projects, from plant floor work to back office systems.
The best thing a project can do to help operations line is to bring about a smooth transition from the end of the project to the improved business operations.
