What do you think are the factors that should be considered in an organization to determine the type of organizational structure to be used in a project (functional, matrix, or projectized)?

When we talk about functional, matrix or projectized structures, they are intended to be enterprise models.

You choose to structure your project organization to suit your delivery. Personnally, I find a multidisciplinary (equivalent to matrixed) or a feature (equivalent to projectized) structure most useful.

The organization structure and the power dynamic surrounding the project is an external environmental factor. Rarely does the project manager have the ability to change that, especially if budget or organization standards prevent the PM from hiring or contracting team members.

The culture of the organization plays an important part in the structure.

The cost of the structure is an important factor? Or do we always have an organizational structure in the projects, that we wish for?

I think the main factors to chose among the 3 project organisations concepts you mentioned are:

1. standard mandated by the organization
2. required / possible power for the project manager (to discharge responsibility)
3. is PM fulltime or parttime
4. team of dedicated or delegated members
5. project crosses siloes

Agree with Stephane.

Usually highly projectized organizations are resourceful and big. And the reporting structure is also projectized.

That being said smaller and medium sized organizations opt for program managers who focus on projects and coordinating with different departments or functional units to get business or strategic value that the organizations envisions.

It depends on several characteristics of the organization:
* type
* culture
* complexity
* size
* stage
* systems and processes
