This question has given an insight of how imperative a professional project manager should handle programme/project successfully.

Guarded analysis; professionalism is incisive when it comes to deep understanding, it depicts the thought of your knowledgeability of concept or theory in empirical form of your profession.

vis a vis theory and practical thought.

In other words, becoming an expert is a call for professionalism that guarantees and distinguishes your know-how expertise in the field of chosen or calling.

Ultimately, exercising your authority in your profession shows your deep insight and knowledge level theoritically and practically.

Thank you.

Esosa.

I like the reply of Sergio.

Each project is unique, and you always have to analyse and understand the context, in social (stakeholder analysis), in temporal (what worked last year must not work today) and environmental (think PESTLE) based views.

Heuristics are good for your own learning, by recognizing patterns, finding mental models and making experiments for problem analysis. But they also result in bias and a narrow worldview. Staying open to anything, considering as many options as possible and understanding how you make decisions (self-awareness) is key for a successful project manager.

I would rather rely on wisdom than on heuristics.

I kind of agree with Thomas. Project Managers using empirical evidence or heuristic is though helpful it is not the correct way of measuring his or performance. The project or program managers focus on outcomes at higher level and the metrics used a ROI, Earned value, Customer satisfaction, reduction in internal conflicts, employee satisfaction, actual cost variance etc. for a Project Manager. In addition, a good project manager gathers requirements in a systematic way, does risk assessment, measures ROI on a project (feasibility) gets that executed with skills and finesse. Management is an art and not very scientific in that sense.
