Those are 3 big questions in one. Briefly answering your first two questions:
You should work on your professional development and gaining experience. A good starting role is a project coordinator role as it will help you get hands-on experience and exposure to various aspects of project management.
There are lots of skill sets required to become a good PM, many are soft skills like leadership, others are hard skills like technical knowledge and so on. Saving Changes...
Whether you are transitioning to PM or a functional manager, you often need to shift more to leadership and less technical involvement. Technical experts are often promoted due to their knowledge and experience and then often try to micromanage the technical details too much rather than supporting the team and removing roadblocks.
The book "What Got You Here Won't Get You There", is a good source for more information. Saving Changes...

Sri,
first set your target for the transformation, the PMI talent triangle serves as a good template.
1. Look at ways of working (how to do things in project management, methodologies, frameworks, processes, tools and techniques), leadership (enforcing the why you do a project, by influencing stakeholders) and context of the project (business acumen, but also time, social and other environments).
2. identify where you stand and decide on closing the gaps
3. let loose of old job roles, PM needs your full attention
You need to develop yourself, customer empathy is just a part, albeit important. You also need team empathy, sponsor empathy, generally stakeholder empathy (also for those who receive dis-benefits from your projects). And empathy is a part of emotional intelligence, which itself if a prerequisite for leadership. And emotional intelligence is a part of wisdom, which we strive to achieve during our life.

The first thing is to understand what a project manager is. Unfortunately when you see what each company understand about the role you will surprise. But the important thing is project manager is a facilitator and has to convince people to work for the project without any "formal power" on the people. Saving Changes...
My employer has asked me to develop a compendium of project management to help with the steps associated with the process of project management. Is there a template out there for this kind of document? Please help. Saving Changes...
