Certifications are something you have earned, not a physical asset. Whether it is a digital certificate or a paper one, it is no less valuable. And if you choose not to renew your certification, you can't claim that you hold the PMP certification, merely that you once held it. For example, you couldn't add it to your CV or e-mail signature line after your name.

I do agree with Kiron. Everything is becoming digital these days, even some university credentials so the fact that you don’t get a physical certificate, doesn’t mean you don’t have an obligation to renew it if you intend to keep officially holding this credential. At the end of the day, it’s your choice.
