Yolanda,
you can add
TUNA (turbulent, uncertain, novel, ambigious) and
FUD (fear uncertainty doubt) to
BANI (brittle, anxious, nonlinear, incomprehensible) and
VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex and ambigious)
All of them play with fears and are used as influencing tools.
Look who is using them as argument and why.
All of them are perceptions, not reality. What is VUCA to one person might be stable, certain, simple and clear to the other person.
And all of them can be seen positive, depending on the situation
- We like to speed on a rollercoaster (well, most of us do or they would not be profitable),
- we like to explore new locations and make experiments to invent new things, in our space of uncertainty,
- we like to steer our board thru the complexity of breaking ocean waves, and
- we enjoy the options we discover when thinking about a problem, because the solution is not clear in the beginning (or it would not be a problem)
Don't be tricked into a problem, where there is only life.
I'd see it as being an updating of the same set of ideas to reflect current realities. The following article provides some good explanation of the transition: https://stephangrabmeier.de/bani-versus-vuca/

Both have no sense to be used. But with the aim to find new ways to carry water for their mill some consulting firms talked about that. Both are terms to describe the environment where organizations have to survive, growth and develop.

The VUCA concept describes the present and refers to the speed with which things change, the lack of clarity, and the complexity of the environment.
The BANI concept describes the future and refers to fragility, anxiety, unpredictability, and difficulty in understanding the environment. Saving Changes...
