I have successfully completed my DASM and CAPM certification. However, I don't hold the typical post of a "project Manager" and am working as an Engineer with my firm. While applying for PMI-ACP or PMP next year, would I be able to use my "years of experience" to qualify or should I keep track of my "Hours" of PM experience?

I would provide a best guess as to what percentage of your time is spent on PM specific activities and assume a 2000 hour year. Trying to actually keep track of your hours as you go is too much work for too few necessary significant digits.

Even as a dedicated PM, I don't spend 100% of my time doing PM work. A reasonable average for estimating is about 80% when you include training, performance reviews, mentoring, non-project team activities, and other administrative chores.

You still need to track the experience. Having your CAPM only covers the PMP education requirements.

Side question. If you're staying in engineering, have you looked into project engineering certifications? I don't know much about them, but I've heard they can be more valuable than a PMP for engineers.

I am unaware about any such certifications from an accredited and widely recognized body. Most of the engineers I spoke to have a PMP in addition to P.Engg.

I would really appreciate if could please share of any Project Engineer certifications...Thank you😄

Your title is not relevant. What matters is what you do so if you do project management activities, regardless of your title, then your hours will count. You should keep track of all those activities.

PMI asks for the following Experience Requirements:

* 60 months experience leading projects (if you have a high school diploma or associate’s degree)

*36 months experience leading projects (if you have a four-year degree)

*24 months experience (if you’re a graduate of a GAC program)
