Career decision: Project Management vs IT Srevices/Support Management
Anonymous
I am a certified PMP, having over 12 years of IT experience, specifically 8 years of IT Project Management experience.
I am bit confused now a days in making the decision whether I move up in the ladder with PM career or should I move to IT services/support management. Recently I got ITIL v3 certification as well.
Mostly in my career, I have been engaged with IT solutions/Projects/Consulting firms and managing small to mid sized IT projects with 15 - 20 people teams.
Thanks.

I think that depends on whether you prefer to manage routine work (which is what you would be doing in a service delivery/support role) or change-type work. Do you prefer to run the business or change the business?
Alternatively, you could look at programme management, which can involve doing a bit of both. Saving Changes...

Yes Project/Program management sounds more exiting than IT operations/services management. Though it also depends on the nature and size of projects. Medium size or Large size projects will be more interesting for someone who manages small size projects. Saving Changes...

If you are a good PM and enjoy that work - stick to it. There is plenty of demand, and the variety of projects keeps things fresh. If you want to be an operational manager and would enjoy less variety and more stability - then go for the IT Services/Support manager gig.
If you wan to manage projects in the IT Services/Support area - that is cool too, just differentiate bewteen the work of a PM working IT Services/Support and an IT Services/Support operational manager.
