A few weeks ago after 24 hours of flights crossing twelve time zones, and the jet lag that comes with it, I found myself late at night watching an old rerun of the TV show, Seinfeld. In this episode, George Costanza, the loser or all losers, gives it a go at doing the exact opposite of his every instinct. The strategy - if what he was doing was not working, then perhaps the opposite would. It worked and landed him a hot date and a job with the New York Yankees.

After a bit of thought of how to apply what I had just seen and laughed at in the context of PMOs and project management, here are George Costanza's Top 10 Tips for appearing to be a good Project Manager. If you have someone at work that needs to do the exact opposite of what they are doing, please feel free to send this to them. And as always, if you have a favorite tip or technique for "What Not To Do", I hope you will take a moment and share them with us.

My number one not to do:

Hide or bury bad news!

Always address it as soon as you become aware of it, come up with the options to rectify the "challenge/opportunity" or whatever euphemism used in your organisation for problem and move forward.

Bad news hardly ever just goes away.
