If you are responsible for the business analysis function on a large project, you can treat that as a mini-project (within the larger project) from a planning & execution perspective.

Also, remember than nearly all the soft/power/people skills of a PM are also used by BA's in their roles - active listening, negotiation, conflict resolution and so on.

In addition to above I would like to emphasize role of Business Analyst in Scope Management- Requirement and Scope finalization, Understanding Stakeholders needs during requirement elicitation, validating scope and cross verifying requirements during initial stages of Integrated change control management.

I agree with the importance of scope management. Obtaining agreement in advance with stakeholders, especially in terms of who is in charge of the scope, will contribute to smooth project management.

I do agree with my fellow colleagues here and would assume that given that you earned your PMP, you do have at least 3 years of PM experience so you already started your career and transitioning to BA role would be easy for reasons that Kiron mentioned.

I agree with Sandeep. The Business Analyst role is a specialized one focusing more on requirements management or scope gathering from customer. In the software industry, since the scope is always challenging, it is difficult to keep up and hence the specialist role. Finally, if you start with this role, as you understand each functional side of software industry, and work with cross functional teams, you can work your way up to a Project Manager.

Both are different roles. You can understand how BA and PM interacts if you see the "Business Analysis for Practitioners: A Practice Guide". Inside the guide you will find sections for each KA where the interaction is explained.
