I have been using Primavera P2, MS Project and MS Excel for managing projects. In my opinion Primavera has very good reporting options but it is not much user friendly while MS Project is much user friendly but in case of a big project I found it comparatively less reliable. And MS Excel gives much flexibility but it is not a ready to use software and it can be a supplement to a specialised project management software.
I am interested to know about other softwares which could prove better. All are requested to share their experiences Saving Changes...
Standalone software are offering limited functionality. Try server based solution either Ms project or Primavera. Both will help you to achieve required results. Saving Changes...

I think that choosing software dependes on several factors.
Starting on basic you should evaluate: Do you really need it? Why and what are the expected benefits? Then you should start analysing the contraints and favorable factors in order to have a short list of possible softwares.
Then just pick what best fits your interests. Saving Changes...
Primarily a PM tool needs to help us plan, track and monitor the progress of a project and as someone said, we shouldn't be spending too much efforts in updating or generating reports from this. I prefer to use Excel as the simplest tool and MS project will certainly help you to plan and report the progress to various stakeholders.
But these are very much traditional tools and if one wants to know what is available in the market, they can refer to a wide variety of tools available from different companies.
