So-called AI -- impact to project management “in all practicality”

A few years ago, I did a poll that asked the question, “Which quality/brand do you most align with as a PM.”
* The relevant poll results are shown below

My question is this:
Of these nine qualities, which ones have the potential to yield to automation provided by so-called AI-based agents/services? Recognizing that “intelligence” does not exist in current-day or probable-day solution offerings.

Which quality/brand do you most align with as a project manager?
- Pragmatist, mixed methods (31)
- Manager (23)
- Coach (16)
- Process Specialist (14)
- Soft-Skills Expert (11)
- Technical Delivery Expert (10)
- Executive (7)
- Philosopher / Architect (6)
- Business Domain Expert (5)

Interesting! What did ChatGPT say? ;-)
This would be a really great webinar where you could do live polling to see if results are different today from your original poll.
(...in all seriousness, you should include a ChatGPT answer as part of your content.)

Hi Karla,

ChatGPTs NLP, and pattern interpretation algorithms would not appreciate the webinar I would create on this subject, as the “facts would not compute” to the human-populated base-knowledge it contains about itself. You can read my perspective on this subject in a recent article I did on this platform.

To the point of this question, though, what PM qualities (referenced above) could a so-called intelligent agent systematically automate such that it would no longer be in the concern scope of a PM?

Are there any – what’s your opinion?

Hi Rami,

The context of the question is to challenge the idea that PMs should have any concern regarding “so-called AI-based applications” taking a material chunk out of a project manager’s role.

The qualities I’m using (that I pulled from a poll I created a few years ago) are perspectives/styles used by project managers.

So, the question – rephrased: Are any of these qualities at risk of being materially impacted by so-called intelligent agents?

Thanks, George. This is a very interesting question but its quite difficult to know at this point and I feel the degree to which AI will takeover will be industry dependent.

Hi Alexandru,

Advancements will continue to be made at ever-increasing delivery speeds.

My issue is that the “theoretical study of artificial intelligence” should be the only thing represented under the umbrella of “Artificial Intelligence” (AI). Everything else, including the current set of products/services in the marketplace referencing AI-technology; should not (in my opinion) represent themselves in this domain.

George -

I feel none of these qualities immediately lend themselves to replacement by AI capabilities, however, the question was posed to PMs in terms of their perspective and didn't ask "What do you spend your time on as a PM?". That question would have revealed a number of activities unrelated to these qualities which are definitely fair game for AI delegation.

Hi Kiron,

I agree with your statement, but I’m purposely representing these styles (which most recognize as critical to PM success) as an anchored argument that elements such as these are not candidates for an AI land grab.

I believe the hyperbole surrounding “so-called AI” is beyond reason and must be moderated with technological truth. Why, because the narrative that sells/funds products/services/research has become the truth by default.

If I examine the products and services that enterprises consume that mention/portray AI elements, then half of the highly-abstract systems I design are AI—and they are not. They are, instead, hard-won evolved design patterns/algorithms/frameworks, etc.

If we analyze artificial intelligence as a purely scientific/theoretical element, in this context, you are probably right. But all these researches remain theory, if they are not applicable in practice. Perhaps you are right that there is too much applicability in hundreds of IT solutions and this creates confusion for those who use it for the first time. But technical-scientific progress must be constantly promoted, both at the theoretical level, among the great human brains, as well as at the end-user level, which will not enter into fundamental scientific laws.

Very interesting question.
I would say, almost none of these qualities are at risk.
