How do you balance the need for detailed planning with the need for flexibility in project management, especially in projects where requirements are likely to change during the project's execution phase?

Alexandru -

What is the "need" for detailed planning? Planning is always commensurate with the level of confidence we have in the information available to us and the degree of uncertainty facing us.

In the situation you indicate, an adaptive approach with high-level scope & solution exploration at the early stages followed by a progressive approach to revealing requirements over the life of the project might be a better fit than a purely predictive one.

From product requirements you create project requirements. So, if product requirements change then project requirements change. You can plan based on the information you have mainly from product requirements and then from lot of other items like environmental conditions. The challenge is to put everybody aware on that.

Alexandru,

if you regard planning as a tool to make stakeholders (including yourself) feel secure and confident, the level of detail depends on the perceived complexity of the task by each group of stakeholders. You can reduce the perception of complexity otherwise instead of detailed planning, e.g. by structuring the project, communicating, rolling wave planning etc.
