I would like to know how can I determine the overall progress (in %) of a portfolio consisting of multiple programs inside each program, there are several projects and these projects and programs may depend on each other. Is there any methodology I can apply to measure the progress (it's ok if it's not highly precise). I have reached to one method which is the weighted average but is there any other method? An example (or a reference) on how to implement it will help a lot.
With portfolios, the % completion is often a moving target because projects are added as others are closed. In that situation I use something more similar to a kanban board. That allows showing projects moving through the various phases or maturity levels. Rather than try to describe total % complete, the metrics depict how many projects are at each level at any point in time and changes since the prior review cycle. Saving Changes...
For portfolios, progress is less important than value realization. As such, you could look at comparing actual value achieved as of a point in time compared with the planned value expected by the same point in time.
And you could look at value achieved in a fiscal year as a function of total expected value forecast for that year.
Hi, this is not directly answering what you asked, but for measuring portfolio progress I think stage gate models are helpful. You can then build a kanban board to show in which stage (i.e., planning, execution, etc.) each program is. Surely you can convert this in a % complete matric if really needed .. Saving Changes...
